First things first: congratulations!
You’re engaged. You’re marrying your favorite person. And suddenly, you may have 47 tabs open on your computer, a Pinterest board growing by the minute, and approximately one million questions running through your head.
Where do we start?
How much should we spend?
Where should we get married?
Who do we need to hire first?
And how are we supposed to make all of these decisions?!
Take a breath.
As an Orange County wedding planner and designer, one of the things I love most about my job is helping couples take all those swirling ideas and turn them into a clear, thoughtful plan.
And here’s the first thing I want you to know:
You don’t have to figure everything out at once.
Wedding planning becomes much more manageable when you understand which decisions need to come first and which ones can wait.
So let’s take a deep breath together and walk through the most important first steps.
Before you open another venue website or start building your vendor spreadsheet, sit down with your fiancé.
Grab your favorite coffee. Go out to dinner. Take a walk. Whatever feels like you two.
Talk about what matters most.
What do you want your wedding day to feel like?
What are the things you absolutely want to experience together?
What traditions matter to you?
What doesn’t matter at all?
Where are you willing to splurge, and where are you comfortable simplifying?
This is your wedding.
There will be plenty of opinions coming your way—from family, friends, social media, and the latest wedding trends. Having these conversations early gives you a foundation to come back to whenever the planning noise gets loud.
Your wedding should reflect the two of you—not everyone else’s expectations.
And now, let’s get to the practical stuff.
This is probably the least glamorous part of wedding planning, but it is one of the most important.
Before you fall in love with a venue, photographer, or floral design, determine what you are realistically comfortable spending.
Talk openly with anyone who will be contributing financially and establish a number that works for everyone involved.
Then build your wedding decisions around that number.
Why?
Because wedding costs can add up quickly. A beautiful idea here, an upgrade there, and suddenly you’ve experienced what I like to call wedding scope creep.
A realistic budget gives you boundaries while still allowing you to prioritize what matters most.
And remember: your wedding budget is not a measure of how meaningful your wedding will be.
Some of the most memorable celebrations aren’t the ones with the biggest budgets. They’re the ones where the couple made intentional choices about where to spend and where to simplify.
This is something I encourage couples to think about early, not after they’ve already made dozens of decisions.
Ask yourself honestly:
Do we want to plan everything ourselves, or would professional guidance make this experience more enjoyable?
There isn’t a right answer.
Some couples genuinely love planning and want to take the lead. Others would rather hand over the logistics and spend their engagement enjoying life together.
And many couples fall somewhere in between.
A wedding planner can help from the very beginning with things like venue selection, vendor recommendations, budget guidance, timelines, logistics, and overall planning.
Partial planning can be a wonderful option if you’ve already started planning but want professional guidance to bring everything together.
Wedding management is ideal for couples who want to do most of the planning themselves but want an experienced professional to step in before the wedding to finalize the details and manage the logistics on the wedding day.
And then there’s design.
If creating a wedding that feels visually and emotionally connected to who you are matters to you, a wedding designer can help translate your ideas into a cohesive experience—from florals and tablescapes to custom details and larger design elements.
At Chasing Joy Creations, these areas can work together under one cohesive vision, which means you don’t have to piece together your planning, design, florals, and creative details on your own.
Once you have a budget and a better understanding of the support you need, it’s time to start looking at venues.
And please—don’t just fall in love with the pretty pictures.
Your venue will influence so many other decisions, including your guest experience, catering, rentals, layout, design possibilities, vendor choices, and overall budget.
Some venues are all-inclusive and may provide things like catering, bar service, tables, chairs, linens, and other essentials.
Others are primarily a blank canvas, meaning you’ll be responsible for bringing in nearly everything.
Neither is necessarily better. It simply depends on what kind of wedding experience you’re looking for.
Before booking, ask:
And whenever possible, tour the venue in person.
Walk the spaces. Ask questions. Take notes. Imagine yourselves actually being there.
A venue can look beautiful online and still not be the right fit for the wedding experience you envision.
Once your venue is secured, you can begin building your vendor team.
This is where it can feel like there are suddenly a million decisions to make.
There aren’t.
You simply need to determine which vendors are most important to you and book those first.
Your wedding photos will become one of the few tangible ways you revisit your wedding day for years to come.
Look beyond a beautiful Instagram feed. Make sure you love their photography style, editing approach, personality, and the way they work with people.
You want a photographer whose work feels like you and whose presence on the wedding day feels comfortable.
If flowers and design are important to you, don’t wait until the last minute to begin exploring your options.
Floral investment can vary dramatically depending on flower varieties, seasonality, quantity, labor, installation, and the overall scope of your design.
This is also where a thoughtful designer can help you prioritize.
You don’t necessarily need flowers everywhere to make an impact.
Sometimes the most meaningful design comes from choosing a few places to really make a statement—your ceremony, bouquet, sweetheart table, or another focal point that matters to you.
More isn’t always more. Intentional is more.
Your band or DJ plays a huge role in the energy and flow of your celebration.
Think about the experience you want your guests to have. Do you envision a packed dance floor? A more relaxed dinner with background music? A lively party that lasts well into the evening?
Your entertainment choice should support the atmosphere you’re hoping to create.
Once your priority vendors are secured, you can work your way through the rest of your team—catering, rentals, hair and makeup, stationery, transportation, cake, content creation, and all of the other details that make up your celebration.
This is where having a planner can be incredibly valuable. Instead of researching every vendor from scratch, you can have recommendations based on your budget, venue, style, and priorities.
This might be the most important step of all.
Wedding planning is a marathon, not a race.
You don’t need to book every vendor in the first two weeks of your engagement. You don’t need to have your entire wedding designed before you’ve chosen a venue. And you definitely don’t need to make decisions simply because someone on TikTok or Instagram says they’re “must-haves.”
Give yourself time to research.
Ask questions.
Have conversations with your partner.
Sleep on big decisions.
And most importantly, come back to the question:
Does this feel like us?
Because your wedding isn’t a Pinterest board.
It’s a celebration of your relationship, your people, your story, and the life you’re building together.
If you’re feeling overwhelmed, start here:
1. Talk with your partner.
Decide what matters most to both of you.
2. Set your budget.
Know what you’re comfortable spending before making major decisions.
3. Decide what kind of support you need.
Consider full planning, partial planning, wedding management, design, or a combination.
4. Choose your venue.
Understand exactly what’s included before you sign.
5. Prioritize your vendors.
Book the vendors who matter most to you first, then work your way down the list.
And then?
Pause. Breathe. Enjoy being engaged.
You only get to experience this chapter once.
Wedding planning can be incredibly exciting, but it can also become overwhelming when you’re trying to manage every decision, detail, vendor, and timeline yourself.
That’s where the right support can make all the difference.
At Chasing Joy Creations, I bring together thoughtful planning, creative design, florals, and wedding management to create celebrations that feel effortless, meaningful, and unmistakably yours.
Whether you’re just getting started or already have a few pieces in place, I’d love to hear your story and help you figure out what comes next.
Your wedding doesn’t need to follow a formula. It just needs to feel like you.
